As the European crypto-asset landscape continues to mature, regulatory compliance has become a strategic priority for firms operating in digital finance. The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) has established the first comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto-assets across the European Union, creating new opportunities while introducing significant compliance obligations for Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs).

With this blog post, Nikolas Xenofontos, Managing Director and Partner at SALVUS Funds, introduces the “Roadmap to Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) Regulation in 2026” workshop. The course is designed to provide professionals with a practical understanding of MiCA, its licensing requirements, compliance obligations, internal audit expectations, and the broader regulatory environment governing crypto-assets.

Whether you are preparing for a CASP authorization, supporting a firm's transition to MiCA, or seeking to strengthen your regulatory expertise, this workshop equips learners with the knowledge and practical insights needed to navigate the evolving crypto regulatory framework confidently.

Why does MiCA matter in 2026?

A key milestone for the European crypto industry was reached on 1 July 2026, marking the end of the maximum transitional ("grandfathering") period available under MiCA. While MiCA became fully applicable on 30 December 2024, existing crypto-asset service providers in certain Member States were granted additional time to transition to the new regulatory framework and obtain the necessary authorisations.

The implementation of MiCA marks a significant step forward for the European digital asset market. By introducing harmonised rules across EU Member States, MiCA aims to:

  • Enhance investor protection
  • Improve market integrity and transparency
  • Establish clear licensing requirements for CASPs
  • Strengthen governance and operational resilience
  • Align crypto-asset activities with anti-money laundering obligations
  • Support innovation while maintaining regulatory safeguards

As regulatory expectations continue to develop, professionals working in crypto-asset businesses, compliance functions, risk management, internal audit, and legal departments must remain up to date with both MiCA requirements and supervisory expectations.

MiCA Provisions for Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs)

A dedicated section of the workshop focuses on the requirements applicable to Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs) under MiCA. Participants will examine the key obligations that firms must meet before and after authorisation.

Key topics include:

  • CASP authorisation requirements, including governance arrangements, risk management frameworks, ICT systems, and internal controls.
  • Cross-border passporting, allowing authorised CASPs to provide services throughout the EU under a single authorisation.
  • Prudential requirements, including minimum capital requirements ranging from €50,000 to €150,000 depending on the services provided.
  • Client protection measures, covering the safeguarding and segregation of clients' crypto-assets and funds.
  • Governance and conduct obligations, including complaints handling, conflicts of interest management, and fair disclosure to clients.
  • Outsourcing requirements and the responsibilities that remain with the CASP when third parties are engaged.
  • ESMA Register and the assessment of significant acquisitions in authorised CASPs.
